A Tragic Loss: Colorado Quarterback Dominiq Ponder's Life Cut Short in Car Crash
The University of Colorado football community is reeling from the sudden and shocking death of one of its own. Quarterback Dominiq Ponder, just 23 years old, passed away in a devastating single-car accident early Sunday morning.
Ponder, a rising star in the program, had been a member for two seasons after joining as a walk-on quarterback. His talent and potential were recognized by coaches and teammates alike, and his death has left a void in the hearts of many.
The crash occurred around 3 a.m. on Sunday morning while Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3. According to the Colorado State Patrol, Ponder was driving westbound on Baseline Road when he lost control of the vehicle while going through a curve to the right, entering into the eastbound lane and hitting a guardrail.
The Tesla went through the guardrail and struck an electrical line pole before rolling into an embankment and catching fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the CSP's vehicular crimes unit is investigating the crash, with the preliminary investigation indicating that speed is suspected to be a factor.
Ponder, a third-year sophomore from Opa-locka, Fla., had transferred to Colorado from Bethune-Cookman. He was beloved by his coaches, who took to social media to pay tribute to his memory. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders wrote, 'God please comfort the Ponder family, friends & Loved ones. Dom was one of my favorites! He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader.'
Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brennan Marion also paid tribute to Ponder, saying, 'A joy to be around & coach! gonna be tough but man this one hurts Lord, getting that call from his dad today didn’t feel real. Love you Dom! God cover his family & our team, especially our qb room!'
Ponder played in two games for Colorado in 2025, making his debut against Arizona on Nov. 1. His sudden death has left a void in the program, and his teammates and coaches are mourning his loss. The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder, who epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence.
