Brushing your teeth in hospital could reduce the chance of catching pneumonia, a new study finds. This simple action can significantly lower the risk of developing non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia, a common and deadly infection. The research challenges the notion that hospital-acquired pneumonia is an unavoidable complication and highlights the importance of oral care in infection prevention. The study, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, involved 8,870 patients across three Australian hospitals and found that improving oral care, including toothbrushing, reduced the risk of pneumonia by 60%. This is the largest trial of its kind and the first completed across multiple hospitals. The mouth is home to billions of bacteria, and oral hygiene often deteriorates when people are unwell, sedated, immobile, or taking certain medications. When these bacteria build up on the teeth, gums, and tongue, they can be breathed in and cause pneumonia. Daily toothbrushing reduces bacterial build-up and has a powerful protective effect. However, in busy hospitals, oral care is often overlooked. Patients may not know the importance of oral care, and staff may be busy with competing priorities. The study's simple intervention included providing patients with toothbrushes and toothpaste, educating them and staff about toothbrushing, assisting patients who needed help, and auditing oral care delivery. This led to a significant increase in the proportion of people cleaning their teeth, resulting in a 60% reduction in pneumonia risk. The research emphasizes that patients are not powerless in preventing infections. Patients can take meaningful action by bringing their own toothbrushes, brushing their teeth twice a day, asking staff for help, and reminding staff of missed oral care. This study strengthens the case for including oral care in national infection-prevention guidelines and nursing practice. It also challenges the assumption that hospital-acquired pneumonia is unavoidable and calls for better monitoring of non-ventilator hospital-acquired infections. The findings highlight the potential for simple interventions to have a significant impact on patient health and safety.
